Sydney in the 1800s was just beginning to establish itself as a city. Being a former British penal colony, its population had an interesting mix of profiles. Here are some of Sydney's not-so-upstanding citizens from the late 1800s.

Louisa Collins, the first woman executed in the Darlinghurst Gaol.
Louisa Collins was born in Scone, NSW in 1849. She has had no previous convictions, but was executed in 1889 for the murder of Mich P. Collins, becoming the first woman executed in the Darlinghurst Gaol.
The Chief Justice was quoted saying, "I hold out no hope of mercy for you on earth!!!"

AG Scott, the "moonlight" murderer.
AG Scott, also known as Captain Moonlight, was born in Ireland in 1843. His previous convictions include false pretences and bank robbery. He was imprisoned for murder at the Darlinghurst Gaol in 1879 and executed in 1880.

Joseph Phillips, the serial thief.
Joseph Phillips was born in England in 1852. A tailor by trade, he has been sentenced to prison at the Darlinghurst Gaol for several counts of stealing, unsound mind, and entering a dwelling.
