Sears was inspired to begin with her project when she noticed many of the subtle reinforcements of typical gender roles from the lyrics of the schoolyard favorite “The Wheels around the Bus. ” As the mommies are told to shush your children, the daddies say “Keep the newborn quiet, ” often associated with stern faces. Dissatisfied using a message that overtly states maternal figures comfort little ones while dads discipline all of them, Sears started writing her own music with support from relatives and buddies who told her, “the mommies within the bus say smash the actual patriarchy. ”
And her tunes do that. Sears started uploading tunes with acoustic guitar and easy-to-understand lyrics to YouTube this past year, including “Princesses Are for everyone, ” which explains that both youngsters can play at dress-up or inside the dirt.
Sears will be able to tackle complex issues and boils them down to make them not merely understandable but age ideal. Take, for example, “Only Yes Means Yes, ” which in turn teaches kids about agreement. Instead of talking regarding sexual assault, the song targets hugs, while reminding kids that “only your system belongs to you. ”
