A little over a century ago, America's druggies were SO hardcore and got "high" off coffee and tea. Say what? Yeah, they were getting high off the caffeine that is often in these popular drinks.
At one point, the United States government sued Coca-Cola for adding caffeine to the soda.

The 1920s brought on booze. But there was one problem for drunkards: Prohibition in America banned the sale of booze. However, gangsters and bootleggers found their way around that restriction, and produced it on the black market.

Marijuana had been popular in the 1930s and had resurgence in the 1960s.
According to the video, young white, middle-class Americans turned to the drug to "loosen up." It was considered the beginning of the modern day drug epidemic.
